Dr. Juan Ortega Barnett was born in Dallas Texas and raised in both the United States and Mexico. He completed his medical training at La Salle University Medical School Mexico City and spent a year on an Indian Reservation as the local physician in northern Mexico. He went on to complete a full neurosurgical residency at the Mexico General Hospital and extended four more years of general surgery training at the University of West Virginia. He then completed a full second Neurosurgical residency training with six more years at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh PA. He also completed a Neuro-Oncology fellowship at the Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He is double-boarded in Neurosurgery. He was in private practice in Boston and Houston prior to joining the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) as an academic Assistant Professor in the Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery.
He has won multiple awards and honors including the Spirit Award, the Resident Teaching Award, the Surgical Resident Research Award and first place in the Surgical Resident Paper Competition Zimmerman lectureship at West Virginia University. He won the Bronze Torch Award and Resident Research Award at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He won second place the national Top Gun competition for technical surgical precision and dexterity at the American Association of Neurological Surgery in 2005. For two years in a row he was a nominee for Physician of the Year Award at Memorial Hermann Hospital, The Woodlands Hospital. Dr. Ortega completed his Masters in Scholars of Education at UTMB and is very active in teaching medical students and neurosurgical residents. He has participated in many conferences and workshops as guest lecturer both national and internationally. Dr. Ortega has multiple peer reviewed publications and book chapters.
He has a wide experience in managing cranial and peripheral nerve disorders, neuro-oncologic pathology, complex spine surgery, neuro-vascular disease, surgery for epilepsy and vagal nerve stimulators, neuro-trauma as well as minimally invasive neurosurgery.
Dr. Ortega has received many praises from his patients and staff as a very dedicated and compassionate physician.
