  • Kevin H. McKinney MD, FACE, is the Charles C. Sprague, MD Distinguished Professor in Internal Medicine, and is a general endocrinologist with an interest in calcium and bone metabolism, diabetes and hyperthyroidism. He has been at UTMB Health since 1988, completing medical school, Internal Medicine residency, and Endocrinology fellowship. He has been a faculty member since 1997; he is currently Interim Director of the Division of Endocrinology and the Stark Diabetes Clinic. He is active in medical school education and serves as Co-Director of the second-year Endocrine and Reproduction course. He is also devoted to resident and fellow education and is the Endocrinology Fellowship Program Director.

    Dr. McKinney has an administrative interest in drug management and previously served as a fourteen-year Chair of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee for the UTMB Health System. He enjoys advocating for physicians and the patients that they care for, and he collaborates with various groups dedicated to the cause of eliminating racial and ethnic healthcare disparities. He enjoys traveling and participating in outdoor activities with his son and wife.

  • Dr. McLellan completed her medical education at Tulane University of New Orleans, after pursuing a degree in anthropology at Princeton University and a Master's in Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley. She began a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Los Angeles County – University of Southern California and completed that program at the University of Miami – Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. McLellan went on to Emory University for her fellowship in adult Infectious Diseases and stayed on there as faculty in the HIV care program. In 1997 Dr. McLellan returned to her home town of New Orleans and Tulane University, and for 20 years held dual faculty appointments in the Section of Infectious Diseases in the School of Medicine, and in the Tropical Medicine Department of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She joined UTMB in March of 2018.

  • Dr. Michelle Mercatante is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine who joined UTMB after earning her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio in 1986.

    She completed undergraduate training at Houston Baptist University where she earned the Achievement Award for College Scientists in 1981 and graduated Summa Cum Laude earning Bachelor of Science degrees in both Chemistry and Biology in 1982. In 1986 she was awarded the Lange Award for outstanding Academic Achievement from the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. She completed internship and residency at UTMB in 1989 and has remained on faculty since this time.  She has served as a faculty preceptor for third and fourth year medical students, and as a preceptor for Community Based Student Education (AHEC), for over 20 years. She also precepts for the General Internal Medicine Statewide preceptorship program, (GIMSPP), teaching first year medical students. She won the Teachers of Distinction Award, “TOP DOC” award, for community based preceptors for exemplary teaching in 2007, and has been named to Castle Connoly's list of Best Doctors in America, a peer based award for excellence in medical care, yearly since 2009.

    Last year she was appointed to the Academy of Master Clinicians for excellence in clinical care.  She is board certified in Internal Medicine and is a member of the American College of Physicians, Texas Medical Association, Galveston County Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. She has been with UTMB for over 30 years and continues to have a thriving practice at UTMB's Community based clinic in Texas City where some of her patients have followed her for over 25 years.

  • Mrs. Laura Murphy graduated from the UTMB Physician Assistant program in 2011. She has worked in Rheumatology since graduation in multiple clinics including Houston, Tacoma, WA, and Killeen, Texas prior to joining the UTMB department in 2021.

    Laura is originally from the Dallas area but considers Galveston her home. When she is not working, she enjoys playing beach volleyball, reading, and spending time outdoors with her husband.   • Dr. Michael Nguyen is an Assistant Professor for the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Raised in Texas City, TX., he has lived in Galveston County for nearly 40 years. Following undergraduate studies at the University of Houston, he attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX., and then completed residency training at UTMB in 2006. He has been a part of our faculty group practice ever since. His clinical responsibilities include hospitalist medicine at Jenny Sealy Hospital.
