Dr. Abate is professor and chief of the Division of Endocrinology and the Charles Sprague, M.D. Distinguished Professor in Internal Medicine at UTMB Health. His research focuses on studying metabolic and genetic determinants of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is the common denominator for the clustering of metabolic abnormalities identified in the "Metabolic Syndrome" and increases risk for both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, two major causes of morbidity and mortality for our population. As director of the Endocrinology Division, he leads a clinical and research program with a special focus on obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Ultimately, the goal of the research and clinical program is to develop effective strategies to prevent type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

very good in personAug 01,2017
I came in for a second opinion as I have been treated for this condition for 4 years by two other providers and have not made much progress and was never asked this many questions about this condition. This was very surprising to me and that really showed me that they are concerned about my health. The questions that were asked were never asked by the other providers. When I asked why all these questions he wanted to know if the other providers asked the same ones. When I replied no he explained that there are many other things that can cause symptoms like I have and they need to figure out the cause first. Kudos to the staffSep 11,2017
Dr Abate LISTENS. In the 20 years of being a Type 2 diabetic, this is the best I've felt AND my numbers are good.Sep 18,2017
