  • Dr. Gabriel L. Reep is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine. He received a B.A. in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin, TX in 2004 and an M.D. degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas in 2006. During his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch, he was awarded Outstanding Intern Performance in Clinic and as well as outstanding 3rd Year Resident Performance in Clinic. He also was inducted into the Dame Cicely Saunders Society for exemplary care in palliative medicine. He served on the UTMB Quality of Care Committee as a House Staff representative during his 3rd year of residency and continues to have an active interest in quality improvement.

    Most recently he worked on the UTMB internal medicine clinic Pneumovax quality improvement project. Currently he is working as a Hospitalist treating acute medical problems that require inpatient care. This allows him to maintain a very close relationship with the UTMB medical school and residency program, as well as to participate in the education and training of future physicians.

  • A graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Anderson completed his residency in internal medicine and postgraduate training in gastroenterology at Vanderbilt University Hospital and the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He was a member of the faculty at the Rockefeller University, Cornell University Medical College and New York Medical College before coming to UTMB in 1987.

    He is a Professor in the Departments of Preventive Medicine and Community Health and Internal Medicine (Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology), and a Member of the Institute for Translational Sciences (ITS) and the Academy of Research Mentors. He is Director of the Clinical Science Program in the Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences. He is an active clinical investigator particularly on the ITS Clinical Research Center (CRC), where he is also Associate Director. His research if funded by NIH, FDA, foundations and industry, and focuses on the human porphyrias and their treatment.

  • Dr. Powell is currently the Director of the UTMB Institute for Translational Sciences-Clinical Research Center and Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, where he is the Bassel and Frances Blanton Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine and Professor, Neuroscience and Cell biology. He directs the NASA Flight Analog Research unit as part of his Clinical Research Center responsibilities. Dr. Powell stepped down from the Chair of Internal Medicine at UTMB in 2002, a position he held for 11 years and he served as Associate Dean for Research from 2002-2006.

    Dr. Powell earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Alabama, Birmingham. He completed his residency training at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and at Yale-New Haven Community Hospital and completed a Special National Institutes of Health Fellowship in Physiology at Yale University School of Medicine. He was a member of the faculty at University of North Carolina for 20 years, where he was Professor of Medicine and the Chief of the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition and Director the NIH-funded Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease.

    He has been funded by the NIH for research in gastrointestinal science for over 40 years. He has served on Study Sections, Councils and Advisory Committees at the NIH, and the editorial boards of numerous medical and scientific journals. He was an Associate Editor of the Cecil Textbook of Medicine, the Yamada Textbook of Gastroenterology, now in its 5th edition, and a new 1st edition text: Principles of Clinical Gastroenterology. He has authored and co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, textbooks and chapters, teaching aids, reviews, and editorials. He has been named in numerous issues of Who's Who and named to Best Doctors in America, America's Top Doctors, etc. many times from 1979 to 2011.

    Dr. Powell served on the Boards of Directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) from 1996 to 2000 and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society for 1999 to present. In 1993-1994 he served as President of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). In 2001, he was given the AGA Friedenwald Medal in recognition of lifetime achievement in gastroenterology and he received the AGA Mentors Research Scholar Award in 2005. He was honored as a Master of the American College of Physicians in 1999 and was named the Texas Chapter Laureate in 2009. In 2002, he received the John P. McGovern, M.D. Award in Oslerian Medicine from UTMB, and was elected as a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2003. A scholarship in the UTMB Nursing School and a named lecture has been established by grateful patients to honor Dr. Powell and in 2009 the annual Don W. Powell Lecture was established by the AGA Institute.

  • Dr. Shabot is currently the Raymond L. Gregory Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair for Alumni Affairs and Development for the Department of Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston. At UTMB, Dr. Shabot's role has been devoted to teaching, patient care, and administration of departmental and educational activities.

    Dr. Shabot earned his medical degree from UTMB where he subsequently completed his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship. He has been a faculty member in the Gastroenterology division since 1978. He has served as Interim Division Director and as Director of Clinical Gastroenterology at various times during his tenure.

    Dr. Shabot is widely regarded for his passion for the practice of medicine as a clinician-teacher. He is a leader in Continuing Medical Education (CME) at UTMB, and has organized over 30 CME scientific programs for a number of organizations including the Texas Club of Internists, the Texas Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, the Texas Academy Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the UTMB Alumni Association, and the UTMB Department of Internal Medicine Alumni Society.

    Dr. Shabot is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Gastroenterology. He has served as Governor of the Texas Southern Region of the ACP, and is the only person from Galveston ever elected to serve in that position. Dr. Shabot has received numerous professional awards including the Laureate Award from the ACP, and the Marcel Patterson-Robert Nelson Award from the Texas Society of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy for lifelong contributions to gastroenterology. Dr. Shabot has also been named a UTMB Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus.
