  • Dr. Okereke was raised in Detroit, Michigan and attended Johns Hopkins University (JHU). After graduating from JHU in three years, he attended Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He did his general surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Dr. Okereke quickly gained leadership positions, and was named the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Brown University in 2013. After 3 years there, he was recruited to be the Chief of Thoracic Surgery and the Program Director of the cardiothoracic surgery fellowship program once implemented at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Dr. Okereke is very active in basic and outcomes research, and is a member of most of the major national cardiothoracic societies. He also serves on many of the hospital committees, including his role as the Chair of the Clinical Competency Committee.

Dr. Okereke is heavily committed to volunteer duties in his spare time. He went to Haiti for disaster relief 1 week after the devastating earthquake, which killed over 300,000 people in that country. Inspired by this trip, he established the Okereke Foundation, whose mission is to provide medical services to underserved areas in this country and abroad, in 2013. He is currently building a surgery center just outside Port Au Prince. The first surgery in this center will be performed toward the end of 2017.
