Anthony J. Senagore, M.D., is Professor of Surgery at UTMB. He has served as Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University and the inaugural Chair of Surgery at the Central Michigan University, College of Medicine. From 2010-2013 he was the Vice-Chair of Surgery and Chief of Colorectal Surgery at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine. He served as the Vice-President of Research and Medical Education for Spectrum Health*, Professor of Surgery at Michigan State University, and staff surgeon for Michigan Medical, P.C. from 2006 to 2010. Dr. Senagore is a past Director of the American Board of Surgery and a past Chair of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He is the current Chair of the Colorectal Surgery Residency Review Committee for the ACGME.
Dr. Senagore earned his medical degree from Michigan State University (MSU), East Lansing, MI. He completed his residency in General Surgery at the Butterworth Hospital/MSU program in Grand Rapids, MI. Dr. Senagore then completed a research fellowship and colon and rectal surgery residency at Ferguson Hospital on the Grand Rapids and East Lansing campuses of MSU. He continued his education and later received his Master of Science degree in physiology from MSU and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, San Francisco, CA campus.
Dr. Senagore was the Krause-Lieberman Chair in laparoscopic colorectal surgery at The Cleveland Clinic. While at the Clinic, he was also medical director in the Office of Medical Operations and associate chief of staff. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Toledo, College of Medicine. During his tenure at CCF he served on the Practicing Physicians Advisory Committee for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (chairing the committee for 2 years), where he advised CMS on physician payment policy.
Dr. Senagore is board certified in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. He is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is a member of numerous organizations, including the American Surgical Association, Pacific Coast Surgical Association, Western Surgical Association, Central Surgical Association, Midwest Surgical Association, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. He is a past president of American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Midwest Surgical Association, and the International Society of Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgeons.
Dr. Senagore specializes in laparoscopic bowel resection, enhanced recovery programs, surgical management of Crohns Disease and Ulcerative colitis, sphincter preserving surgery for rectal cancer, treatment of anal incontinence and constipation, and management of anorectal disorders. Among his many clinical and research interests are: surgical innovations in laparoscopic bowel surgery; molecular and genetic changes in colorectal cancer; and new surgical treatments for incontinence and constipation. He has lectured on various topics related to colon and rectal surgery, edited 6 textbooks in colon and rectal surgery, authored over 220 peer-reviewed publications and 20 textbook chapters. Dr. Senagore is a national and international speaker on colorectal surgical topics and is a recognized expert in medical economics and value based purchasing.
