Dr. Smith is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Knee and Shoulder Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston, Texas. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from John Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1991. After completing his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, he completed a one-year subspecialty fellowship in 1998 in Sports Medicine at the Hughston Sports Medicine Foundation, Inc. in Columbus, Georgia. Dr. Smith was recruited to UTMB in 1998 and currently is the Associate Professor, Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine Knee and Shoulder Surgery and Medical Director in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation (DOSR) Clinic and Surgery, Jennie Sealy Hospital, Galveston, Texas and Victory Lakes Specialty Care Center, League City, Texas. He has been Board Certified with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) since 2000. He received a Certificate in Healthcare Management from Rice University in 2011.
Dr. Smith serves on numerous committees' at UTMB such as: the Planning Committee and Co-Director, Friendswood Independent School District Sports Physicals, the Musculoskeletal Service Line Committee, the Epic Surgical Orders Management (SOM) Project, the Director of the Saturday Sports Clinic at Victory Lakes, Elective Surgery Process Optimization, Physician Leadership Academy, Jennie Sealy Hospital Second Construction Build Out Design and Construction Committee, the Operating Room Committees for John Sealy Hospital, Jennie Sealy Hospital and Victory Lakes Specialty Clinic and Surgery Center, the MSRDP-Medical Service Research & Development Plan, and the Ad-hoc Committee Medical Liability Case Review.
As an Associate Professor at UTMB, School of Medicine, Dr. Smith's teaching responsibilities include, Orthopaedic Residency Clinical and Surgical Education and Training, Medical Student Orthopaedic Service Education, Conferences and Lectures and Journal Club for Orthopaedic Residents, Shoulder and Sports Medicine Weekly Orthopaedic Service Conferences and Clinical Conferences, as well as wet and dry labs.
Dr. Smith has given numerous regional, national and international presentations, lecturers and exhibits. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. In addition to his publications, he has a number of ongoing research projects.
