Melanie Gray was born in Houston, TX and raised in the once small town of Pearland, TX. She initially received her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from UTMB in 2004, graduating with honors. After working in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Texas Children's Hospital and in the Day Surgery Unit at University General Hospital, she pursued her master's degree at UTMB. With two young girls, one on the way, and the help of her husband, she received her Master's of Science in Nursing and became a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2015.
With a passion for primary care, she accepted a position at Texas Gulf Coast Medical Group in 2016. At TGCMG, she grew as a nurse practitioner and served as a preceptor. Recently, she joined the Primary and Specialty Care Clinic at UTMB.
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She can usually be found hustling kids to different activities or enjoying time outdoors.

Dr. Fulcher is Chief of the Section of General Obstetrics and Gynecology at UTMB Galveston Main Campus. He holds a bachelor's degree from North Texas State University in Denton, Texas, and received his medical degree and residency training at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He is board certified in obstetrics & gynecology. As a result of his interest and experience in contraception management, he has served on the Family Planning Advisory Committee for the State of Texas Board of Health, and as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Health Family Planning Services. Dr. Varghese is a physician at the Victory Lakes Town Center Clinic in League City. Dr. Varghese completed his medical residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Tyler, Texas, where he served as Chief Resident. While clinically trained in a broad scope of medicine, his expertise includes adult and children's health, minor procedures, and preventative care.
As a physician, my patient care practices are centered around three core beliefs. First, I believe that patient autonomy should be respected. Both patient's beliefs and evidence-based medicine should be incorporated into workup and treatment plans as every patient is different. Secondly, I believe that teamwork is essential to provide the best possible care. I aim to use the knowledge and expertise of other health professionals to do so. Dr. Karren Lewis is an academic faculty at the UTMB Galveston campus. She has a passion for providing full spectrum women’s healthcare for women of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. She has special interests in minimally invasive surgery, family planning, medical education, and international health.
Dr. Lewis grew up in Wyoming and first found a passion for OB care assisting on the family sheep ranch. She graduated with honors from Michigan State University with a degree in Health Science and International Studies. She then participated in Teach for America, teaching high school science in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas before returning to medical school at the University of Washington. While in medical school she co-founded several service-learning projects and was awarded the US Public Health Service, Excellence in Public Health Award. She expanded her studies to get a Master of Public Health in Global Health as well as Global Health and Hispanic Health certificates. She completed residency at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. She served two years as the Education Chief and helped co-found the Advocacy Committee. She received the Outstanding Resident in Gynecology Oncology Award and the Society for Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons Outstanding Minimally Invasive Surgery Resident.
Dr. Lewis has a strong passion for equitable care for all women. She is active with local and national advocacy and strives to provide the best care for each patient, while also fighting to improve the system for all patients. She strives to provide compassionate, personalized, and up-to-date care.
Dr. Lewis and her husband, Jose, are new to the Galveston area and excited to become a part of the community. In her free time, she enjoys travel, outdoor activities, gardening, and taking care of their dog.

Lucy Villarreal, M.D. is a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Division of Gynecology. Dr. Villarreal completed her medical degree and 3 years of residency training at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. She completed her last year of residency training at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center where she then became an Instructor for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Villarreal returned to Texas to teach as Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty for the McLennan County Medical Education and Research Foundation Family Practice Residency Program. She subsequently founded Central Texas Women’s Care, PA, where she entered private practice for many years. Dr. Villarreal has participated as Department Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology for Providence Hospital and was on the Ethics and Infection Control committees.
Dr. Villarreal is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is currently a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Her clinical interests include uterine bleeding, gynecologic surgery and minimally invasive procedures, menopause, contraception, abnormal Pap tests, and care of the obstetric patient.
Dr. Villarreal is married with two children. She enjoys philanthropy and places community needs at the core of her personal mission. New-to-UTMB providers or individuals in less common areas of practice may be temporarily under this threshold. We set this baseline to ensure we offer the most accurate reflection of each Individual.

As part of that commitment, we share providers’ patient satisfaction ratings online. Below are answers to some common questions about the ratings information:

WHAT’S THE SOURCE FOR THE RATINGS?

All ratings are submitted by real patients who have used UTMB Health services. We partner with Press Ganey, an independent leader in measuring patient and consumer satisfaction, to solicit unbiased feedback on our behalf via online and mailed patient surveys.

We measure all aspects of the patient experience to ensure that we are holding ourselves to the highest standards.

WHY DON'T WE SEE PATIENT RATINGS AND COMMENTS FOR EVERY CARE PROVIDER?

There are two reasons a physician or advanced practice provider may not have a rating listed:

At UTMB, a provider's ratings are only posted when she/he has a minimum of 30 completed surveys within the past twelve months. New-to-UTMB providers or individuals in less common areas of practice may be temporarily under this threshold.

We set this baseline on responses to offer the most accurate representation for each UTMB physician or care provider. With consumer ratings of any type, more data yields more accurate results; a low number of responses can skew results disproportionately—in a favorable or negative fashion.

The UTMB Health provider directory includes listings for independent community physicians and other health care providers who partner with us to care for patients in our facilities. The ratings for these providers—typically part of their own private health care practices—are not currently available to us. However, a quick web search typically results in a wealth of consumer information about the qualities and attributes of all the well-vetted caregivers working in UTMB facilities.

WHO RECEIVES THE SURVEY?

The survey is emailed to each patient who has provided an email address, and it is also mailed to a random selection of those who do not use email within a few days following an appointment.

So that we don’t burden patients, patients are typically not sent more than one survey in 90 days, even if they’ve had multiple visits to a clinic.

DO YOU POST ALL COMMENTS?

UTMB is committed to transparency. That means we post all relevant feedback – whether it’s positive or negative, with just a few conditions as outlined below.

We do not edit comments. We also do not post comments that risk the privacy of our patients, that could be interpreted to be profane, slanderous, libelous, or racist, and/or that are about a provider or service other than the one being rated.

WHAT QUESTIONS ARE ASKED IN THE SURVEY?

UTMB utilizes the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Clinician and Group Practice survey, which was developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for use in hospitals and medical practices across the country. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) promoted the development and use of this survey to allow comparisons across the country. The survey asks patients to evaluate how well their physician communicated, listened, and showed courtesy and respect toward them. Results are used to evaluate patients’ overall perception of care and to identify areas for our own improvement at UTMB.

Providers are rated on a scale from 1 to 5, where 1 is the lowest satisfaction possible and 5 is the best. We calculate our star ratings based on responses to the following survey questions:
