All ratings are submitted by real patients who have used UTMB Health services. We partner with Press Ganey, an independent leader in measuring patient and consumer satisfaction, to solicit unbiased feedback on our behalf via online and mailed patient surveys.

We measure all aspects of the patient experience to ensure that we are holding ourselves to the highest standards.

WHY DON'T WE SEE PATIENT RATINGS AND COMMENTS FOR EVERY CARE PROVIDER?

There are two reasons a physician or advanced practice provider may not have a rating listed:

At UTMB, a provider's ratings are only posted when she/he has a minimum of 30 completed surveys within the past twelve months. New-to-UTMB providers or individuals in less common areas of practice may be temporarily under this threshold.

We set this baseline on responses to offer the most accurate representation for each UTMB physician or care provider. With consumer ratings of any type, more data yields more accurate results; a low number of responses can skew results disproportionately—in a favorable or negative fashion.

The UTMB Health provider directory includes listings for independent community physicians and other health care providers who partner with us to care for patients in our facilities. The ratings for these providers—typically part of their own private health care practices—are not currently available to us. However, a quick web search typically results in a wealth of consumer information about the qualities and attributes of all the well-vetted caregivers working in UTMB facilities.

WHO RECEIVES THE SURVEY?

The survey is emailed to each patient who has provided an email address, and it is also mailed to a random selection of those who do not use email within a few days following an appointment.

So that we don’t burden patients, patients are typically not sent more than one survey in 90 days, even if they’ve had multiple visits to a clinic.

DO YOU POST ALL COMMENTS?

UTMB is committed to transparency. That means we post all relevant feedback – whether it’s positive or negative, with just a few conditions as outlined below.

The survey asks patients to evaluate how well their physician communicated, listened, and showed courtesy and respect toward them. Results are used to evaluate patients’ overall perception of care and to identify areas for our own improvement at UTMB.

Providers are rated on a scale from 1 to 5, where 1 is the lowest satisfaction possible and 5 is the best. We calculate our star ratings based on responses to the following survey questions:

Karin Fox, M.D., M.Ed. is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist whose clinical and research interests center around patients with the Placenta Accreta Spectrum, complex surgical deliveries, postpartum hemorrhage, maternal transport and the management of pregnancy in women with diabetes and obesity.
Dr. Fox volunteers as a committee and/or board member for numerous professional organizations, including: the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Education Committee for which she co-coordinates the SMFM Fellows Lecture Series; the Perinatal Research Society Obstetrics representative; as the Education and Outreach board member for the International Society for Placenta Accreta Spectrum (IS-PAS) and as Treasurer of the Pan-American Society for the Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS2), which she helped establish as a 501(c)3 organization. She has also worked with the National Association of EMS Physicians while in her previous role as Director of Maternal Transport. Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Fox earned her Bachelor of Arts in German Language and Literature at the University of Oregon and served in active duty in the U.S. Army as a medic and ambulance driver.
After her residency and fellowship at UTMB, she received a Master of Education in Curriculum and Evaluation for healthcare professions from the University of Houston, and continues promote medical education to all levels of providers.

Dr. Olson Koutrouvelis received her medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, NE. She completed her residency at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore and completed a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, also in Baltimore. She was inducted into the Academy of Master Teachers in 2007 and has been listed in Super Doctors® in 2013 among many other honors.

WHY DON'T WE SEE PATIENT RATINGS AND COMMENTS FOR EVERY CARE PROVIDER?

There are two reasons a physician or advanced practice provider may not have a rating listed:

At UTMB, a provider's ratings are only posted when she/he has a minimum of 30 completed surveys within the past twelve months. New-to-UTMB providers or individuals in less common areas of practice may be temporarily under this threshold.

We set this baseline on responses to offer the most accurate representation for each UTMB physician or care provider. With consumer ratings of any type, more data yields more accurate results; a low number of responses can skew results disproportionately—in a favorable or negative fashion.

The UTMB Health provider directory includes listings for independent community physicians and other health care providers who partner with us to care for patients in our facilities. The ratings for these providers—typically part of their own private health care practices—are not currently available to us. However, a quick web search typically results in a wealth of consumer information about the qualities and attributes of all the well-vetted caregivers working in UTMB facilities.

WHO RECEIVES THE SURVEY?

The survey is emailed to each patient who has provided an email address, and it is also mailed to a random selection of those who do not use email within a few days following an appointment.

So that we don’t burden patients, patients are typically not sent more than one survey in 90 days, even if they’ve had multiple visits to a clinic.

DO YOU POST ALL COMMENTS?

UTMB is committed to transparency. That means we post all relevant feedback – whether it’s positive or negative, with just a few conditions as outlined below.

WHAT QUESTIONS ARE ASKED IN THE SURVEY?

UTMB utilizes the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Clinician and Group Practice survey, which was developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for use in hospitals and medical practices across the country. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) promoted the development and use of this survey to allow comparisons across the country. The survey asks patients to evaluate how well their physician communicated, listened, and showed courtesy and respect toward them. Results are used to evaluate patients’ overall perception of care and to identify areas for our own improvement at UTMB.

Providers are rated on a scale from 1 to 5, where 1 is the lowest satisfaction possible and 5 is the best. We calculate our star ratings based on responses to the following survey questions:

Dr. Luis Pacheco is the Division Chief of Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine as well as Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Surgical Critical Care at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
Dr. Pacheco has been a member of the faculty of UTMB since 2008 and serves as the Director of Obstetrical Critical Care and Director of the Residency Education Program for the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. He is the Departmental Director of the Obstetrical Patient Safety Committee and Chair of the Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Clinical Competency Committee.
Dr. Pacheco completed medical school and his first residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Costa Rica. He then completed a second residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and two fellowships, one in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and the other in Anesthesiology Critical Care, all at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He is triple board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Pacheco’s work in both maternal fetal medicine and critical care medicine is unique in that he is the only maternal-fetal medicine specialist in the country who actually staffs a non-obstetrical surgical critical care unit along with other critical care specialists. His publications have contributed significantly to the education of maternal fetal medicine doctors and general obstetricians regarding medical complications during pregnancy. He has written a textbook addressing medical diseases in pregnancy and has directed courses around the United States in similar topics. Dr. Pacheco has written expert opinion papers for the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine in topics such as amniotic fluid embolism.
His research interest is in critical care obstetrics.
