About Me
Boris A. Zelle, MD, MBA, FAAOS, FAOA is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon and Tenured Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. He joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in September of 2025. Dr. Zelle received his medical degree from the Georg-August University of Gottingen, School of Medicine. He subsequently pursued his clinical training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where he successfully completed his orthopaedic surgery residency followed by a one-year fellowship in orthopaedic trauma surgery. Between 2011 and 2025, he served on faculty at UT Health San Antonio, where he held different key leadership roles, including Vice Chair of Research, Division Chief of Orthopaedic Trauma, and Program Director of the Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship. In 2017, Dr. Zelle also completed a preceptorship in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Dr. Zelle is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Orthopaedic Association (AOA), Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), and the Texas Orthopaedic Association (TOA), and he has held different leadership positions within these organizations.
Throughout his career, Dr. Zelle has maintained a busy orthopaedic trauma practice with many years of experience of practicing at accredited Level 1 and Level 2 trauma centers. His clinical interests includes the complex care of polytrauma patients, pelvis and acetabular fractures, complex periarticular injuries, nonunion/malunion surgery, as well as and post-traumatic foot and ankle reconstructions. Dr. Zelle is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in his field. He serves as a board examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). In addition, he is on the editorial boards of Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, which are the leading journals within his field of expertise. Dr. Zelle has also given numerous invited lectures at national and international conferences and served as visiting professors at prestigious universities in the US, Europe, and South America. Dr. Zelle has received different awards for his clinical excellence, including the 2024 UT Presidential Staff Excellence in Service Team Award.
