  • A consultant in hematology and transfusion medicine and an Associate Director of the UTMB Blood Bank, Dr. Alperin is a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He received postgraduate training in internal medicine and hematology at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago and advanced training in hematology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He has been a member of the UTMB medical staff since 1963. In 2002, he was selected to be one of the inaugural Osler Scholars in the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine at UTMB.

    Dr. Alperin is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and has received the Laureate Award from the Texas Chapter of the ACP. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, Texas and Galveston County Medical Societies, American Society of Hematology, International Society of Haematology, International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, American Association of Blood Banks, and American Osler Society. During his lengthy career, Dr. Alperin has participated actively in investigative hematology. As a result, he is the author or coauthor of more than 125 papers and abstracts on a wide range of topics related to the study of blood and its diseases. These articles have appeared in numerous publications including but not limited to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Archives of Internal Medicine, Blood, American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Transfusion, New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Hematology, JAMA, and Texas Medicine.

    Recognized as a dedicated and effective teacher, Dr. Alperin has received the Golden Apple Award from the junior class in the School of Medicine. He has also been honored for his skills as a teacher by the School of Medicine Alumni Association, the Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Pathology, and the School for Specialists in Blood Banking.

    A skilled clinical hematologist, Dr. Alperin has been recognized by Texas Monthly as one of the Top Hematologists in Texas for the past six years. He has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of patients with anemia, hemoglobinopathies, hemorrhagic diseases, thrombotic disorders, other benign hematologic diseases, and problems with blood transfusion.
