  • Dr. Akshata Moghe obtained her medical degree from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences in 2007 and earned her Master’s and PhD at the University of Louisville in 2010 and 2012, respectively. She began her work with the human porphyrias in 2013 before joining the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for her residency in Internal Medicine in 2014. After her residency, she went on to complete two fellowship programs: first in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and then in Advanced/Transplant Hepatology. She was voted Chief Fellow in her final year of Gastroenterology fellowship. She has obtained both her American Board Certification in Internal Medicine and American Board Certification in Internal Medicine-Gastroenterology.

    Dr. Moghe joined the University of Texas Medical Branch as an Assistant Professor in August 2021. Her clinical and research interests lie in liver diseases, with a focus on the human porphyrias and hepatocellular carcinoma. She is involved in clinical trials in porphyria and recently received an award from the NIH and Porphyrias Consortium for her project titled “Effects of Intravenous Heme and Placebo on Gene Expression in Patients with Acute Attacks of Hepatic Porphyria”. She is also a member of the United Porphyrias Association Scientific Advisory Board, a national organization aiming to advance porphyria awareness, research, and therapies.
