  • Dr. Rupak D. Kulkarni is an Assistant Professor of Transplant Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). He has been with UTMB since 2017. Dr. Kulkarni holds the John Sealy Distinguished Chair in Transplantation Surgery and serves as the Surgical Director of Abdominal Transplant, Surgical Director of Liver Transplantation, Surgical Director of Living Donor Kidney Transplantation, and Surgical Director of Living Donor Liver Transplantation.

    In 2004, Dr. Kulkarni earned his MD equivalent Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at the K.J. Somaiya Medical College and Research Centre in Mumbai, India. He then went on to obtain his General Surgery degree (MS) at Bharati Vidyapeeth University in Pune, India, in 2009.

    Dr. Kulkarni continued his training in multi-organ transplant and hepatobiliary surgery. He completed his first fellowship in living donor liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgery at the Medanta (The Medicity) Hospital in Gurgaon, India, which is one of the world's largest living donor liver transplant programs, from 2010-2011. He went on to complete a multi-organ (liver/kidney/pancreas) abdominal transplant and hepatobiliary surgery fellowship at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, from 2011-2014.

    From 2015-2017, Dr. Kulkarni served as Honorary Consultant Surgeon at the Dr. Bhanushali Hospital in Thane, India.

    Dr. Kulkarni is a member of several state, national, and international surgical societies and regularly attends transplant and hepatobiliary surgery meetings to learn advanced techniques for his surgical practice at UTMB.
