About Me

Dr. Joseph G. Nevarez is a highly experienced physician specializing in hyperbaric medicine and wound care, with a clinical focus on diabetic foot ulcers and limb preservation/amputation prevention. Fluent in English and treating patients of all ages, Dr. Nevarez brings over two decades of expertise to his role at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).

He earned his undergraduate degree from California State University, Fullerton, and his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine. He completed both his internship and residency in Community and Family Medicine at the University of California, Davis.

Dr. Nevarez is dual board-certified in Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine with a subspecialty in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. He is also a Certified Wound Specialist Physician (CWSP) through the American Board of Wound Management and a Fellow of the American Professional Wound Care Association.

With over 20 years of experience in hyperbaric medicine and wound care, Dr. Nevarez has practiced in a variety of settings including outpatient centers, skilled nursing facilities, and hospitals. His background in Family Medicine enhances his ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and understand the complex role of comorbidities in wound healing.

Dr. Nevarez emphasizes a team-based approach to care, where communication and collaboration among specialists are key to optimizing healing. He is passionate about patient education and empowerment, ensuring that patients and caregivers are active participants in the treatment plan.

Previously, he served as Medical Director at UT Health/Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where he led the hyperbaric department to achieve UHMS Certification With Distinction—an honor awarded to only 4% of hyperbaric facilities nationwide.

Dr. Nevarez resides in Pearland, Texas, with his wife and three children. Outside of medicine, he enjoys long-distance running and has been a comic book collector since childhood.
