About Me

Dr. Cohn completed his MD and PhD, medical residency, and gastroenterology fellowship training at Washington University in St. Louis after which he joined the faculty in the Gastroenterology at that institution. In 1998 Dr. Cohn was recruited to the University of Virginia Health System. He was appointed to the Paul Janssen endowed Chair in Medicine and Gastroenterology. In 2007 Dr. Cohn became Medical Director of the Digestive Health Center of Excellence. In this position he was responsible for overall medical direction of digestive health services at UVA including establishing programs to enhance clinical quality and safety, strategic planning, and operational management of inpatient Digestive Health services, the outpatient clinics, and endoscopy. Dr. Cohn was subsequently appointed Interim Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Medical Director of the Digestive Health Service Line at UVA. Dr. Cohn joined UTMB in 2017 as Director, Division of Gastroenterology and Associate Chair, Department of Internal Medicine. He holds the Bassel and Francis Blanton Distinguished Professorship in Medicine. Dr. Cohn directs the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship program. He was recently appointed to the UTMB MSRDP Board of Directors.

Dr. Cohn has served as a member of a number of NIH and Foundation study sections and has chaired several study sections for the National Institute of Health. He has published over 57 manuscripts and book chapters related to the biology of the intestinal track and intestinal inflammation. His clinical interest is in in treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases.
