About Me
Dr. Salim Hayek is a cardiologist and Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at UTMB. His clinical focus is cardio-oncology, helping patients prevent and manage heart problems related to cancer or its treatment. He also cares for patients with general heart conditions, including heart failure, coronary artery disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
Before joining UTMB, Dr. Hayek spent nearly a decade at the University of Michigan's Frankel Cardiovascular Center, where he led a cardio-oncology program caring for patients during and after cancer treatment. His research has focused on identifying patients who are more likely to develop heart or kidney problems, which directly shapes his emphasis on prevention.
Dr. Hayek's approach starts with understanding each patient's situation, priorities, and perspective. He focuses on prevention and is deliberate about recommending tests or treatments only when they are likely to help. Patients can expect a clear conversation about their risks, their options, and the reasoning behind any recommendation.
Dr. Hayek cares for patients with cardio-oncology concerns as well as general heart conditions at UTMB.
