  • Dr. Gerald Campbell is a highly respected neuropathologist who has made major contributions to clinical service, research and education. He is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Neuropathology.

    He is the inaugural holder of the L. Clarke Stout, Jr. and Elaine F. Stout Professorship in Surgical Pathology. The endowment was established in 1999 through a generous gift from UTMB faculty member, L. Clarke Stout, Jr., MD, and his wife, Elaine, to recognize a faculty member who has demonstrated superior performance in the areas of teaching, patient care and/or research.

    Dr. Campbell serves as Director of Anatomic Pathology and Assistant Director of the Autopsy Division. He has played an important role to ensure efficiency and high quality of the Pathology Clinical Services, a well-run operation for which the department is renowned.

    Dr. Campbell's area of research includes modification of blood-brain barrier function by biochemical and inflammatory mediators as well as pathogenesis of cerebral small vessel disease and vascular dementia. He has received funding for his work from several sources, which includes the NIH, Sealy Center for Structural Biology, and Shriners Hospital for Children. Dr. Campbell has a substantial publication record with 61 peer-reviewed articles, and has also authored or co-authored several book chapters. He has been a key collaborator on multiple investigations, including studies describing the first case of West Nile virus at UTMB.

    Further attesting to his expertise in neuropathology is his service as an ad hoc reviewer for a number of journals. He has also served as a member of a NIH grant review panel and editorial board member of the Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology, the official journal of the American Association of Neuropathologists. Dr. Campbell holds memberships in numerous professional organizations. In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Campbell is a highly productive and well-regarded teacher. He lectures to residents in the Departments of Pathology, Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Neurology and the Neurosurgery Division.

    Dr. Campbell earned his PhD degree in Physics from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1975 and his MD degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1977. He completed his residency in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology at Duke University Medical Center from 1981-1984. Dr. Campbell joined the Department of Pathology at UTMB in 1985.
