Dr. Anita Mercado received her medical degree, completed an Internal Medicine residency and completed Pulmonary and Geriatric Medicine fellowships all from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She then joined the faculty as a board certified Associate Professor of General Internal Medicine.
Dr. Mercado has been titled UT System Distinguished Teaching Professor. She has received numerous teaching awards and was inducted as a member of the UTMB Academy of Master Teachers in 2012. Her educational focus is on medical student curriculum development and clinical skill assessment and methods for improving their bedside clinical skills. Her clinical interests include pulmonary rehabilitation, COPD, Chronic diseases in the elderly. Dr. Mercado is currently a hospitalist and heavily involved in medical student and resident education in the inpatient setting.
