  • Dr. Carlos Javier Jimenez was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. He received his medical training at Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He went on to complete general surgery residency at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio. He then completed fellowships in Burns and Reconstructive Surgery and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Texas. Since finishing his fellowship, he has participated in both burn and trauma critical care and is actively involved with the acute care general surgery program at UTMB. As Associate Professor, he is an active core faculty to the Level 1 Trauma Center at UTMB. At the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Dr. Jimenez is actively involved in clinical research for the improvement of acute burn care and the rehabilitation of burn patients. He serves as Chairman of the Infectious Disease Committee at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Texas.

As part of the surgical critical care fellowship program, he has spent a great part of his career lecturing and training critical care surgeons. Today, these surgeons are directing and staffing intensive care and burn units in other hospitals nationally and internationally in places such as Ohio, Toronto, Monterey, Mexico, Tamil Nadu, S. India, London, and Bohn, Germany. Dr. Jimenez also received the golden scalpel award by the residents of the surgical program for his support and participation in training general surgery residents and critical care fellows. He has also been given the Distinguished Teacher of the Year honor by the American Osler Society.

Dr. Jimenez's research specializes in Acute Burn Care and Trauma. He has published articles in The American College of Surgeons Journal, book chapters in “Total Burn Care”, 4th Ed., and in Burn Awareness videos in collaboration with Shriners Hospitals for Children and the Houston Firefighters Burned Children's Fund. He has been honored as a guest speaker at many conferences locally, nationally, and internationally. Looking at the future, Dr. Jimenez sees himself at the cutting edge of technology by implementing privately funded clinical trials of different products for the care of burn injuries.

Dr. Jimenez is also board certified in both general and critical care surgery. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Burn Association, and many other medical professional societies. Most of his personal achievements are credited to his family who have sacrificed so much to support his education and success.
